In the chaos of the Summer holidays it’s sometimes easy for interiors (and exteriors) to get out of control but there are simple ways to both freshen and cheer your home and keep the mess under control. Here’s a few ideas that work for us!
Hair ties, earrings, keys, matches, TV remotes, paper clips, keys, magazines, hats, sun screen… on and on and on it goes…that Summer clutter…use clever pretty storage- hand woven baskets are great-for dull bits and bobs- make sure you pop away all the ghastly stuff, so you focus on the beautiful and don’t end up gazing at the mess. Both Summerill and Bishop and The Basket Room have so many great baskets to choose from, just like the very small colourful hand woven baskets pictured here.
Particularly important in a heatwave! Pack away the quilts: light cotton throws with just a single crisp white cotton sheet underneath are perfect on your bed during hot Summer months and they don’t have to cost the earth (we have pretty fully reversible throws in 3 different colours- all hand block printed in Rajasthan and lovely to sleep under- from £75.00 ).
Beds, sofas and chairs: go wild and get throwing the throws. Bright coloured textured throws add instant colour and update furniture instantly without the expense of upholstery. Vintage kantha throws are our absolute favourites- and they’re great for student rooms and houses too as they pop in the washing machine and bounce back to life beautifully. It’s amazing how just a few throws can cosy up and add oodles of character any room.
It really doesn’t matter what you paint but painting pieces of furniture, walls or ceilings will bring a fresh pop of colour, bringing new life to any room for little expense. And it’s the Summer: be bold with your colour: strong yellows and bold blues work beautifully. A bright piece of furniture in a neutral or white space adds great style and personality too. Blue is always a great choice!
Mix n Match n Colour It Up Outdoors
We love using bold colours in the Summer: when dining outdoors don’t be afraid to mix and match away. We love block print table linen but it looks great mixed in with old plain coloured linens (Designer’s Guild have new sumptuous colours every year- well worth checking out), coloured glass and a mix of ceramics works wonderfully too. Our hand blown tumblers from Afghanistan have been really popular this Summer and add a great pop of colour to your table.
Hope you are all having a fabulous Summer! Love from all at ibbi xx
