Jodhpur, the blue city of Rajasthan is home to the small workshop where our intricate bone inlay products are created. Ornate, eye catching and stunningly beautiful, this is a traditional craft that has been handed down through the generations. Inlay is practiced in the Udaipur, Jaipur and Jodhpur regions of Rajasthan. It derives from the ancient craft of Intarsia which dates back over 3000 years.
To create our inlay products, first the design is drawn on to paper and then each piece of the design pattern is individually carved from bone. All of these pieces are then painstakingly fixed to the product’s base (usually made from wood) in their intricate designs. Coloured resin is pasted round the pattern to make the bold background colour- slightest changes in the weather can cause subtle changes in the colour and texture of the resin so no two items of bone inlay are ever quite the same- all part of their hand crafted appeal.
Once the resin is dry, the products are very gently sanded. This is to make sure the levels are quite even and the bumps have been removed . This process is then repeated over and over, until the the inlay pattern is at last revealed. It is exciting that there are endless patterns and colours that can be created- both in traditional designs and now more frequently in bold contemporary geometric designs. Hand crafted and unique- that’s inlay work- and it’s exactly what we love.
